Anisotropic self-affine properties of experimental fracture surfaces

چکیده
The scaling properties of post-mortem fracture surfaces of brittle (silica glass), ductile (aluminum alloy) and quasi-brittle (mortar and wood) materials have been investigated. These surfaces, studied far from the initiation, were shown to be self-affine. However, the Hurst exponent measured along the crack direction is found to be different from the one measured along the propagation direction. More generally, a complete description of the scaling properties of these surfaces call for the use of the 2D height-height correlation function that involves three exponents ζ ≃ 0.75, β ≃ 0.6 and z ≃ 1.25 independent of the material considered as well as of the crack growth velocity. These exponents are shown to correspond to the roughness, growth and dynamic exponents respectively , as introduced in interface growth models. They are conjectured to be universal.

متن کاملLattice Boltzmann simulation of fluid flow in fracture networks with rough, self-affine surfaces.
Using the lattice Boltzmann method, we study fluid flow in a two-dimensional (2D) model of fracture network of rock. Each fracture in a square network is represented by a 2D channel with rough, self-affine internal surfaces. Various parameters of the model, such as the connectivity and the apertures of the fractures, the roughness profile of their surface, as well as the Reynolds number for flo...

– We model numerically the partial normal contact of two elastic rough surfaces with highly correlated asperities. Facing surfaces are unmated and described as self-affine with a Hurst exponent H . The numerical algorithm is based on Fourier acceleration and allows efficient simulation of very large systems. The force, F , versus contact area, A, characteristics follows the law F ∼ A in accorda...

A new experimental method aiming to the characterization of self-affine rough surfaces is presented. Based on a three dimensional reconstruction of the relief from stereo pairs obtained with a scanning electron microscope, it allows a non-destructive quantitative analysis of fracture surfaces, with a xy and z resolution only slightly lower than the original images. The roughness index of the fr...
